Ashley Wood Spaight (1821-1911) of Selma, AL, was the son of John and Matilda Wood Spaight. A veteran of the Creek War of 1836, he entered the University in 1839, joined the Philanthropic Society, and graduated with second honors in 1842, becoming a lawyer in 1845. The following year he was elected to a two-year term in the Alabama legislature. In 1859 he married Victoria M. Riggs and moved to Liberty County, TX, where he established a plantation. A brigadier-general in the Confederate army, after the war Spaight became a delegate to the Texas Constitutional Convention of 1866 and from 1880 to 1883 was Texas’ state commissioner of insurance, statistics, and history (Wooster).
